What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient tradition and science dedicated to helping individuals lead happier, healthier lives. The practice cultivates a connection between body, breath and mind. This connection leads to both physical and more deeply-rooted, energetic benefits. Yoga helps us to become more aware and more mindful in our daily lives while relieving stress, tension and fatigue.
Many yoga classes use the word 'Namaste' at the beginning or end of class. Namaste means "I bow to the Divine in you". It is used as a gesture of respect for one another. Many classes also begin and end with the chant of Om which means "the Divine which manifests as all that is". These terms are deeply rooted in the tradition of yoga.
What are the benefits of yoga?
The physical benefits: Creates a toned, flexible, and strong body. Improves respiration, energy, and vitality. Helps to maintain a balanced metabolism. Promotes cardio and circulatory health. Relieves pain. Improves your athletic performance.
The mental benefits: Helps you relax and handle stressful situations more easily. Teaches you how to quiet the mind so you can focus your energy where you want it to go - into a difficult yoga pose, on the tennis court or golf course, or in the office. Encourages positive thoughts and self-acceptance.
The spiritual benefits: Builds awareness of your body, your feelings, the world around you, the needs of others. Promotes an interdependence between mind, body, and spirit.
How often should I practice Yoga?
The more you practice, the more yoga will positively influence your body and your life. The more you see this positive influence, the more you will want to practice! Many people start with a once per week practice, but quickly increase this to three or more classes per week. Ultimately, a yoga practice is best done daily - although this may not always happen in a class setting. Even just a few Sun Salutations practiced in the morning will help you start your day with mindfulness and positive energy. Two to three times a week will provide noticeable results. We offer price discounts through class packages.
I've never done Yoga, how do I get started?
The best way to get started is just to get started! Jump the first hurdle and try one of our yoga classes for beginners. Arrive at least 15 minutes before class and take a few minutes to talk to the instructor. Tell the teacher about any pre-existing medical conditions and discuss any hesitations you are feeling about trying yoga. Giving yourself time to settle in before class will help you feel more comfortable in the studio environment and will ensure you have a great, positive experience. Yoga Sanctuary is a studio that is welcoming to students of all levels, so you need never worry that you won't feel at home - this is your sanctuary!
What if I'm not flexible, or can't see my toes?
Yoga is not a practice of being flexible - it is a practice that helps develop flexibility. Yoga practice at Yoga Sanctuary is for everyBODY - everyone can benefit from making their body stronger and more limber, their breath more easeful, and their mind more serene. Yoga can improve both your body and your body image, teaching you to find contentment in the present moment. We welcome everyone to try yoga and we embrace diversity.
Do I need reservations?
New students are welcome to drop-in. We will set you up with an account so you can easily check-in online in the future. We encourage regular students to reserve their class online to ensure space in the class. We can give you more instructions about reserving classes at the front desk. However, you can always drop-in for any class offered at Yoga Sanctuary.
Is there a place to change clothes?
Yes, there is a restroom where you can change before class.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing that you can move in. Yoga pants or sweat pants are fine, and you'll prefer a close fitting T-shirt. Avoid lotion on hands and feet, which may cause slipping on the mats. Avoid strong perfumes.
What should I bring?
A towel, water and a mat. We offer free mats to use during class, but would recommend that regular students purchase their own mat. We have a water cooler and we sell recyclable water bottles (that are really cute). We also sell towels that you can keep handy with your mat.
Can I leave class early if necessary?
Yes, but not as a regular practice. Life always calls, ask it to wait until you finish your practice... Each class ends with a period of final relaxation (called savasana) which typically lasts 10 - 15 minutes. This is an important part of your practice when your body assimilates all of the work from the practice. You won't want to miss it!
Can I eat before class?
It is advisable to practice yoga on an empty stomach, allowing approximately 2 hours after a meal before practice.
